Original Pronunciation

Shakespeare O P is a theatrical production company that produces and stages Shakespeare’s plays as faithfully as possible in Original Pronunciation (O P). In other words, Shakespeare heard as Shakespeare spoke it.

We believe that hearing the plays in O P allows audiences to feel the language rather than simply understand the words. Some of the sharpness and softness of the characters can only be discerned by hearing them spoken as in Shakespeare’s day, that is, in an Elizabethan dialect. There are rhymes in Shakespeare’s texts, long missed in Modern English, that become quite clear in O P. Our audience for Twelfth Night spoke enthusiastically about how Shakespeare O P sounded like music, almost like opera!

We invite you to join us on this O P journey. Learn how our original voyage to Tangier Island in search of the lost Elizabethan dialect led to our first O P production of Twelfth Night, which his has furthered our work within the larger O P community that is exploding worldwide. We welcome your feedback and comments, which you can provide on our blog or by contacting us directly.
